The Jesuit Marauders
tame the Wolves from Woodland
in a 49-13 Thanksgiving Feast
by Sargon Benjamin
On Friday the 27th, Elk Grove's Thundering
Herd battled the Grant Pacers at Elk Grove for a spot to play in the City Championships
against the winner of Jesuit vs Woodland. Number 1 ranked Elk Grove stammered over the
Pacers with the help of running back and linebacker Lance Briggs entering the Herd into
the City Championships. Then on Saturday the 28th, the number 2 ranked Jesuit Marauders
battled the Woodland Wolves for a chance to play Elk Grove in the City Championships. The
Marauders, playing at home, came into Saturday's game pumped up believing that they could
beat any team that wished to challenge them and rightfully so. With standout players like
Jeff Reiman and Justin Thomas, the Marauders have the talent to beat any team as shown in
last Saturday's game.
Jesuit won the toss and chose to receive the opening kickoff to
get some momentum going. Backing up the Marauders were the inspiring Sixth Man, the huge
home crowd, the Pep Band, and the experience of a well educated coaching staff. Right from
the get go, fullback Jeff Reiman not only powered his way to the end zone but also showed
tremendous speed in doing so. Then the defense came onto the field and once again, they
stuffed the Wolves from the start with great plays from Mike Catapano, Josh Day, and
Justin Thomas. Both defensive linemen Josh Day and Mike Catapano had excellent games
consisting of a couple sacks and numerous tackles. This great defensive drive forced
Woodland to punt; consequently, the Jesuit offense was hungry for more points. Not
satisfied with only one touchdown, Jeff Reiman ran right through the middle running over
anybody in his way into the land of quick six making the score 14-0 Jesuit. But the Wolves
still had some fight in them and they scored off a 10 yard touchdown pass making the score
14-7. The feeling was tense for fear of a Woodland comeback but Jesuit secured the first
half by ending in a 21-7 lead.
In the second half, key players like Brian Karns, Kelly Micco,
and K.C. Maxwell stepped it up giving the Marauders plenty to be thankful for this
Thanksgiving Weekend.
Thanks to trainer DeAnn Piazza, two way starter K.C. Maxwell
recovered successfully from his knee injury against Burbank to come and help his team tame
the Wolves. To top that, Jeff Reiman earned the confidence of his offensive linemen and
with their help, he ended the game with a sensational 4 touchdowns. The final score was
49-13. Thanks to everyone at the game who cheered for Jesuit! Just remember, next week the
12-0 Marauders battle the 12-0 Thundering Herd at Hughes Stadium Friday December 4, 1998
at 7:30pm. Tickets go on sale in the Dean's office on Wednesday. Be there and join the
Sixth Man. |
