Varsity Football gets closer to 10-0 as they beat Valley 35-6.
by Sargon Benjamin
On Saturday October 16, 1998, the JV Football team faced another
obstacle in the Valley Vikings. Despite the recent loss of Coach Vince Campisi's wife and
Coach Tavalero's mother, the JV Football squad has found a way to move on by keeping these
two important individuals as their inspiration. This can be seen on the back of anyone of
the sophomore's football helmets where there is a sticker with the letters CT (Campisi,
Tavalero) attached on the back.
The Marauders' offense struggled in the first quarter due to a fumble and
poor third down conversions, however, the Big Red defense would stay strong and keep them
in the game with a 0-0 score at the end in the first quarter. Then, as the clock started
to click in the first seconds of the second quarter, quarterback Chris Gonzalez connected
with outstanding receiver Brian Benson for a 20+ yard touchdown. Consistent kicker,
Brandon Collins easily added a point to the score with his tremendous kicking ability.
After that, it was all Jesuit and the team got stronger as the game went on. Chris Dalton,
the phenom running back, would power his way through the line building a solid running
game for the Marauders. Adding to that, defensive play
makers like Josh Jimenez and Adam Harper picked it up by intercepting two passes. After
the 35-6 win over the Vikings, sack leader Scott Cavell said, "I'm honored to play on
a team with so much skill and determination as this team does." With a great coaching
staff and determined players, the JV Football team should and deserves to go undefeated
this year.
