Jesuit Marauders Win Metro League Championship by Flying Past the Falcons
of Christian Brothers
by Sargon Benjamin
Trying to imitate the previous Freshman and JV teams of Jesuit who
defeated CB, the Varsity Marauder basketball squad hosted the Christian
Brother Falcons in front of a full house on Friday night. Knowing that
no seats were left in the stands and that the little theater was
jampacked, both the Falcons and Marauders realized that they would have
to put on a show for the huge crowd and they did just that. After the
starting lineups were introduced, Jesuit got off to a great start when
sophomore center for Jesuit, Maurice Tyree, won the jump ball followed by
Cedrick Barrow getting 2 points off an easy lay-up. Jesuit got to an
early 4-0 lead before the Falcons could get their first bucket of the
game. But Maurice Tyree would not allow many shots to get past him in
the middle and proved his point numerous times by blocking countless
shots. But the Falcons would not give up and at the end of the first
quarter, the scoreboard read 15-10 in favor of Jesuit.
Then, in the second quarter, seniors P.J. McGahan and Brian Shaffer got
into the action by playing strong defense and connecting on a couple of
open shots from downtown. The first half ended with Jesuit on top 33-27.
During the third quarter, it was all Jesuit with key supporters like
sophomore Phil Rasmussen and and junior Roy Stigall backing up the team
with baseline shots. Maurice did his job by capturing rebound after
rebound allowing the Maruaders to capitalize on C.B.'s missed baskets.
With a little bit of pride and strength left, C.B. bounced back into the
game by scoring on some open three pointers and capitalizing on three
point plays from the foul line. But it was too little too late, Jesuit
would go on to win the game with great performances from Mike Fitts and
Cedrick Barrow and smart coaching by Dean Meyers. The game was won and
the score was 61-47; Jesuit style.
