Young Marauders Play Big by Defeating the Falcons in Double Overtime
by Sargon Benjamin
Probably the most exciting game of the whole day, the freshmen battle
between C.B. and Jesuit was a fierce one. A couple of weeks earlier, the
two teams had battled at C.B. and Jesuit had won in triple overtime so
fans knew that this would be an exciting game. The freshmen Marauders
got off to an early lead by playing smart offense and solid defense. Key
contributors were center Aaron Coen who blocked numerous shots making his
presence be felt on the defensive side as well as the offensive side of
the ball by making some clutch baskets. In addition, Daniel Wood played
a solid game at the guard position by passing effectively and shooting
with the result of nothing but net. But the freshmen of C.B. were not to
be underestimated, for they came back in the second quarter by causing
numerous turnovers and capitalizing on many occasions. Consequently, the
first half ended with Jesuit Marauders up only by a couple of points.
In the second half, the lead changed more than ten times and the tempo of
the game got faster. Jesuit's Taylor McCarthy put Jesuit back on top in
the fourth quarter with a couple of minutes remaining by scoring on a
turn around jumper. Then, the Falcons would come back and tie the game
forcing an overtime period. In the first overtime, C.B.'s number 30
dominated the game giving the Falcons an early cushion but with only
seven seconds remaining and down by two points, Jesuit's Taylor McCarthy
went to the free throw line in hopes of tying the game. His first shot
went up and out and the Jesuit fans were shocked. But under the guidance
of Coach Andre, the tall players got under the basket and after Taylor
missed the second free throw, a tall freshman from Jesuit got the ball,
shot, and missed. And then he caught his own rebound and scored. The
crowd went wild and the game went into double overtime.
In double overtime, it was all Danny Wood. He had some assists, played
great defense, and clinched many free throws to secure the win for
Jesuit. Good job freshmen!
