J.V. Water Polo team drives toward sections
By Michael Longyear
Once again, the coaches of Jesuit High School have produced a power house
water polo team. Led by coach Keagen Smith, the J.V. water polo team is on the fast track
to becoming Metro League champions. The Marauders started the season by humiliating Campo
Lindo, destroying Fairfield, outplaying Lodi, and defeating Rio with the explosive offense
of sophomores, Andrew Lindsey and Greg Ruiz. "We have a strong team and I think we
can go all the way," said Lindsey. However, The Marauders undefeated streak stopped
when they met Miramonte. Miramonte, one of the top teams in Northern California, just
squeaked by The Marauders in a 7-6 win. "They were a tough team, but I know we can
beat them if we get the chance to play them again," said sophomore Michael Rossiter.
After facing top rated Miramonte, the Marauders entered one of the most
prestigious frosh/soph water polo tournaments, hosted by Valley. After fighting valiantly,
the Marauders took fifth place going4-1 in the tournament, losing to Rio in the
quarterfinals. Sophomores Andrew Lindsey and Greg Ruiz are the leading goal scorers, and
other starters include: Nick Pointer, Mike Wright, and Ryan Johnson. The Marauders have an
exceptionally deep team, and competition for playing time is fierce. Stars from the bench
include sophomores Michael Rossiter and Bryan Landgraf. Both players contribute
consistently, scoring goals in each game. This team is quite strong, and next season don't
be surprised to see another Section Championship pennant hanging on the gymwall. |
