Freshman Overnight Retreat
by: Giovanni Fuoco
The freshman overnight retreat is a stepping stone to
the brotherhood that is distinctly JESUIT. The Big Brothers involved in the retreat had
prepared for the event for several weeks with two group meetings and many other individual
group meetings. They planned out the opening ceremony, which had a great comedy skit done
by Mark Bertuldo and Jebb Mirell, created prayers for each activity planned for the two
day retreat, wrote essays about personal experiences and beliefs, shared who they were
with their freshman brothers and gave up their time to help make this retreat as
incredible as their freshman overnight was.
Some of the senior's families also
helped by providing a place for the Saterday Night activities. The families cooked
delicious meals for twenty to forty people, some of which included lasagna, salad, bread,
tri-tip meat, seasonal fruits, and potatoes. The families also sacrificied their time by
stepping out while the discusions and prayers were taking place. When everyone returned to
the gym late Saterday night they were well feed, happy, and seemed to be feeling better
about themselves and those around them. The frosh all commented on how great their time
was at the Big Brothers house. If it were not for the parents and the space they provided
for us to use none of that would have been possible. All of our thanks and prayers go out
to those families.
Some of the other guys who were
behind the scenes were the Ground Crew members. They helped as Mr. LeBoeuf said," to
setup...take down...setup...rest...setup some more...and eat." Without the help of
those guys the retreat would not have gone on as it did. They also helped at the senior's
houses to do whatever was needed for the dinner and any of the activities. We all thank
them for their contributions and hope that they too will be Big Brothers next year.
I think all the Big Brothers grew
even closer together as friends and as a class. It was like going on our Freshman
overnight again, but knowing what was going to happen. All of the Big Brothers deserve to
be thanked for there effort, time, and honesty as they help to mold the class of 2002 to
become "Men for Others". |
