A Car Article is a Car Article - Nothing More, Nothing Less

By: Dimitri Rigopoulos ‘99

Recently I was at JHSnet reading the guest book and I found several responses concerning the article I wrote about Mr. Watson’s car (refer to the Speed Thrills Article). First of all I would like to say that the situation surrounding this article has been blown extremely out of proportion. The article was written so that I could relate my interest in cars to the reader and hopefully spark their interest in the subject. Instead Mr. Mirell has labeled me an ego booster, and Dean Avdalas has insulted JHSnet by saying that it is spending its money unwisely. Mr. Avdalas is a member of Student Council (Hey Jebb, I spelled council right.). However, last time I checked Mr. Avdalas was not president or vice-president so let me ask you Mr. Avdalas, "What right do you have to tell JHSnet how to spend its money?" Not even the president could tell JHSnet how to spend money given to it.

Mr. Avdalas mentioned in his article that maybe I should write about cars that appear in Car & Driver and Motor Trend. No one at Jesuit with the exception of Mr. owns an exotic car, and therefore it wouldn’t be relevant to the students. If students want to read about exotic cars, the can buy these periodicals at the store. It seems the Mr. Avdalas has taken a hypocritical view on this particular subject. Isn’t he the same student that I have seen behind the wheel of an expensive Mercedes? If he feels that I am ruining the image of Jesuit by showcasing fast cars, maybe he should stop doing the same and take the bus to school. Hey Dean, open mouth, insert foot! Once again everyone has missed the point of my articles. No one said you had to be rich and drive a fast car.

In response to Mr. Mirell’s response about censorship, a newspaper or periodical has the write to prohibit any articles it does not see fit to grace its pages. If the response isn’t news worthy and was written with malicious intent, specifically termed libel, I don’t know any publication that would print it. We welcome all opinions that are tastefully written. However excessive bad mouthing in a blatant and cruel manner cannot and will not be tolerated. Our readers might be offended by it.

The majority of the letters in the guest book and the two responses of Jebb Mirell have chided the author of this article for writing articles that are a waste of space. The editor-in-chief of the JHSnet came to me and asked me to write these articles concerning the cars of Jesuit, and it’s his opinion that counts the most isn’t it. These articles will not be removed from the paper do to a few opinions. If you don’t like what I have to talk about in my car articles, no one is forcing you to click on the link and read it.

It isn’t likely that I will be personally involved in this argument anymore due to the plain and simple reason that while I respond to these opinions, it keeps me from writing the articles I was originally asked to write.

P.S. Jebb, you do mention fast cars in your response, specifically "fast-car-driving misfits."
