Grace Court: Not so Graceful Anymore
By Sargon Benjamin

There once was a time when the freshmen court consisted only of a large rectangular grass area that was horrible. The grass was muddy and wet when it rained and soggy and mushy in the summer. So, in 1995, school officials decided to beautify the area with a great deal of funding from QSP. The grass that once lay in front of the 100-200 wing would be transformed into Grace Court, an area where the freshmen could hang out and have fun. At the same time, a statue of Our Lady of Grace, the Virgin Mary, would be placed right in the middle to give the freshmen the true Jesuit experience. After some hard work and dedication, Grace Court emerged from the once soggy grass in 1996.
The first class to experience Grace Court was the class of 2000, and one class member, Ashur Benjamin, stated that, "Grace Court was a cool place to chill because it had benches, a peaceful state, and was gratifying." The classes of 2000 and even 2001 have appreciated the gift of Grace Court by keeping it clean, but it seems as if this year's freshmen do not realize that Grace Court is special and needs to be kept clean.

Upon walking through Grace Court, one can clearly notice the empty pizza boxes, sandwich wrappers, and crumpled up bags of chips lying all over the ground and benches of Grace Court. Even worse, there is always a ton of garbage laying on the ground right next to the garbage cans. And yet, it seems as if the freshmen do not even care or notice, for many of them just walk past the garbage as if it were supposed to be there. Now, I can understand not cleaning your room because I have not cleaned mine for years, but trashing a holy place is just unimaginable.

Do not get me wrong here: the freshmen this year have proved themselves a worthy class, for the freshmen football team went undefeated (only the second freshmen team to do that in Jesuit history), the freshmen collected thousands of pounds of cans for the food drive, and they also gave a solid fight during Spirit Week. However, these amazing feats are put aside upon viewing what Grace Court has become. Hopefully, the freshmen can be informed by this article and start throwing their trash away (in the garbage cans ofcourse.) So if you're a freshmen and you're reading this message, please do your part in giving Jesuit a good name by cleaning up Grace Court.
