A Deeper Look at Political Ad Campaigns
By Brian Abreu

Election time always seems to anger me. And why, you may ask. Well, its quite simple. Everyone running for office is evil. Inherently evil (Ooh, power sentence, now I got your attention.) But lets set that aside for just a moment. What seems to boil my blood (other than Democrats) are the political ads shown on television. There seems to be nothing more irritating than being interrupted in the middle of my favorite show by someone who pretends to relate with me and claims to have the power to solve every problem in California... if we elect him. But wait, here's the kicker-- the interruption is a direct result of citizens of California giving their hard earned money to some politician who has enough money to feed an entire third world country for a week. And worst of all, this money we have so graciously given up is going to support a campaign which I in no way support.

So, who am I talking about specifically? Well, everyone. For example, I'm sure we have all heard Gray Davis' ads attacking his opponent, Dan Lungren. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember hearing something like "voted against school lunches, against education... " and so on. Excuse me Davis, do you honestly think that I (and the rest of California) am so stupid, so incredibly mentally incapacitated, that I can't figure out that you're lying? When was this nice bill, say lets call it the anti-education bill, written? Perhaps it sounded something like this: "under the new anti-education act, all education will be abolished. There will be no more school lunches, teachers will be fired and students will be shipped out on the streets." Was there a bill like this? No! Did Lungren vote for this? I don't think so. Lets see what probably happened. Lets say Lungren voted against a bill that would raise taxes to support a certain construction company, which happens to use a certain type of metal, which is in turn used in the construction of hubcaps which are used on trucks that transport the salisbury steaks to school cafeterias across California. Therefore, Lungren voted against school lunches? Heck no. Ok, this never happened, but I think you get my point.

This is, however, not to say that Lungren is innocent. I'm sure there is dirt on him, but I don't feel like going into that. Anyway, that would mean more digging for mud to sling, and quite frankly, I don't want to be a hypocrite. People don't want to hear it.
